Huskers land QB Luke McCaffrey

Huskers nab Colorado quarterback Luke McCaffrey as their 2019 quarterback

Nebraska locked up one of their top 2019 targets today in four-star quarterback Luke McCaffrey out Valor Christian HS in Littleton, CO. A talented multi-sport athlete, McCaffrey visited Nebraska back in April for the spring game and didn’t pull the trigger with his commitment right away. Instead Luke opted to take his time and make sure he made the right decision with his commitment.

“I’ve known that I wanted to go to Nebraska for a while now. My parents especially wanted me to make sure that I checked out other schools and make sure this was the right fit and I thought it was finally time to announce it.”

Husker fans should be thrilled at the commitment of Luke McCaffrey. McCaffrey has tremendous athletic pedigree running through his bloodlines.

Luke is the son of NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, his mother Lisa (Sime) is the daughter of Olympic sprinter Dave Sime, and brothers Dylan McCaffrey (Michigan QB), Christian McCaffrey (NFL Running back), and Max McCaffrey (NFL wide receiver).

“Everything I know I’ve learned from them. I’ve learned that wherever it feels right and wherever you think you’ll get a good opportunity to grow as a player and live for 4-5 years is where you’ve got to go and for me that just felt like Nebraska,” he said.

At this point, McCaffrey is shutting things down with his recruiting and won’t be taking recruiting visits to any other colleges this fall. He is committed and is full steam ahead with Nebraska.

According to McCaffrey, Nebraska is taking a single quarterback in the 2019 class so expect the coaching staff to gently shut things down with other quarterbacks and focus on the 2020 class from here on out at the position.

With Luke McCaffrey in the fold the Huskers have completely remodeled their quarterback room over the last 7 months. The coaches landed high school quarterback Adrian Martinez last season and added a transfer from UCF quarterback Noah Vedral this spring. With those newcomers in the fold along with Tristan Gebbia and Andrew Bunch the Huskers quarterback room looks remarkably different than it did at the conclusion of the 2017 season.

One of the Huskers biggest selling points for landing Luke was his relationship with Nebraska quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco.

“I thought from the moment I met him that we connected. I love the way that he looks at the game. He really hones in on the details of the quarterback position just mentally and with the science of the quarterback. I think what he will bring to my game will help me really grow,” said McCaffrey.

Look for McCaffrey to start peer recruiting for the Huskers as they start to make headway with several offensive line and wide receiver prospects. THe Huskers are also after a variety of Colorado recruits all whom McCaffrey interacts with and can help bend the ear of.
