Tracking changes to the Huskers weekend visitor list

As the 2018 recruiting cycle begins to hit its peak frenzy recruits and coaches begin the arduous task of whittling down their lists and making last-minute moves to address their needs.  When programs hit the busy January recruiting period one of the most difficult tasks they have is managing their official visit count.

This is amplified this year at Nebraska after the university made a decision to change staffs in December. Under NCAA rules each school can use 50 official visits each year and in some cases roll over a small number of unused visits from the season before.

In Nebraska’s case, they have a total of 56 official visits to use this season with 21 of those still available to use between now and signing day. Currently, the class has around 15 commits (12 signed and locked in) and is targeting anywhere from 22-25 commitments when the dust settles on February 7th.

Earlier this week the Husker had 9 different official visitors scheduled to check out Nebraska but after mid-week changes that number has shifted to 8 official visitors with an additional 2 unofficial visitors.

1/12/18 Official Visitors – Nebraska
Caleb Tannor – OLB/DE Matthew Tago – QB
Taiyon Palmer – CB Daniel Carson – DE
Jarrett Bell – OG Javontae Jean-Baptiste – OLB
Breon Dixon* – OLB Miles Jones – RB/ATH

*Breon Dixon is a potential transfer from Ole Miss

If you’ve been following recruiting closely you’ll notice that high school running backs Ta’Zhawn Henry and Maurice Washington are missing from the updated visitor’s list in addition to cornerback Braxton Clark. The Huskers are believed to be the leader for both running backs which has fans scratching their heads at the changes. Running back Miles Jones is still set to visit this weekend and while he is a talented back he is probably more versatile than the others as he can slip out into the slot as a shifty wide receiver when needed.

With regards to Washington, keep in mind is that he’s been under-recruited due a rough patch he went through in his junior year where he wasn’t attending classes or putting effort into his grades. Coach Frost and staff scrubbed his visit this weekend and will go see him in person next week. With so few official visitor slots, they are likely checking in to make sure the work he’s done in his senior season was enough to get his grades in line for college and they aren’t using a visit on someone that is at risk of not qualifying due to grades.  It could also have to do with the amazing weather slated for Lincoln this weekend and the staff hoping it warms up a little bit the next few weekends

Braxton Clark’s visit was also scratched this weekend and it’s likely due to the staff having a few names higher on their recruiting board visiting such as Taiyon Palmer. With official visits at a premium, the staff is doing what they can to bring in their plan A guys before moving on to plans B etc. Mike Williams is also off the visitor’s list but that’s due to his commitment yesterday more than anything else.

Things are not all doom and gloom as the Big Red are set to host a few big names this weekend that have been flying under the radar up until this point. They secured an official visit from hybrid OLB/DE Caleb Tannor as well as talented defensive end Daniel Carson who the previous staff was pursuing but had yet to host for a visit.

Carson is a true defensive end at the next level and is part of a loaded group of kids out of Missouri this year. Tannor, on the other hand, is listed as a defensive end but is more of a hybrid linebacker/defensive end who specializes in pass rushing.  Both of these guys would be big additions to the Blackshirt defense and terrific prospects for the staff to lock up but will have to fight off other programs up until signing day to do so.

While we don’t expect any more changes in this weekend’s list of official visitors keep an eye out as things change in a flash in recruiting.
